OAHU ISLAND - GENERAL INFO
Oahu, the most populated Hawaiian island, is the third largest of its kind. It is located in the state of Hawaii. The state capital is Honolulu. It is also known as “The Gathering Place†. Covering a total area of 596.7 sq miles, it includes some small offshore islands like the Ford Island & Kaneohe Bay.
The island has been formed by the shield of two different volcanoes - Wai’anae & Ko’olau. There is a broad valley between the two. The highest point on this island is Mt. Ka’ala in the Wai’anea range, which rises up to 4,300ft above the sea level. Oahu has a population of 900,000. Hawai’ iloa, the Polynesian navigator who discovered the Hawaiian Islands, is credited with having given the island its name. Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Waikiki, Kane’ohe Bay & North Shore are some of the well-known features on the Oahu Island.
