The Hulihee Palace

Hulihee Palace

Hulihee Palace

A former vacation home of the Hawaiian Royalty, the Hulihee Palace is located in Kailua-Kona in Hawaii on the Alii Drive. Hulihee originally means, “turn free”. It has now been transformed in to a museum & at present is run by the Daughters of Hawaii. Therefore, it need not be said that it displays the historic furniture & artifacts. Built out of lava rock, this museum was built by the then Governor John Adams Kuakini. The palace gradually was passed on to the possession of Princess Ruth Keelikolani. Even though the princess made the palace her chief residence, she preferred sleeping on the grass hut rather than inside the palace.

Later on, this palace was sold on to King Kalakaua & Queen Kapiolani. The King renamed this palace “Hikulani Hale” meaning the “house of the seventh ruler”. He referred to himself as the seventh ruler of the monarchy that began with King Kamehameha I. King Kalakaua remodeled the palace to give it a new appearance. The “Daughters of Hawaii” group dedicated their lives to preserving the cultural legacy of the Hawaiian Islands & the history of the Hulihee Palace. If you ever visit the Hawaii then do make it a point to visit this palace.
