QUEEN EMMA SUMMER PALACE

Queen Emma Palace
Serving as a retreat for Queen Emma of Hawaii, her husband King Kamehameha IV & their son Prince Albert Edward. Located at 2913 Pali Highway, the summer’s Palace has now been transformed into a museum. Open for public view daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., this museum is maintained by the income from entrance fees, revenue from gift shops & funds raised by the “Daughters of Hawaii”.
A popular location for the Hawaiian royalty & the non-Hawaiian residents, Hanaiakamalama is located in the Nuuanu Valley. It is pertinent to note that the frame of this palace was built in Boston in 1848 & transported via the water route to Hawaii. Consisting of six rooms, this palace is one-storied with a porch built in the Greek revival style. Two years after its completion, this house was purchased by John Young II for $6000 in 1850.
Queen Emma was the niece of John Young. She added the Edinburgh Room to the rear structure of the palace on the eve of the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh. Later on, the ‘Daughters of Hawaii’ bought this site with an aim of restoring this monument to the history of Hawaii.
