In Hawaiian local language the word ‘Akaka’ means split or to crack. There is a folk lore amongst the locals about the falls that the huge stone amidst stream, called the Pohaku o Kaloa which is almost 70 ft to the upstream, would be struck by branch of an ‘ohi’a tree, it would summon the sky to get dark and rain.

A perfectly groomed nature hiking state park, Akaka, has parking lots, drinking water availability, and even clean and hygienic washrooms.

Direction To The Akaka Falls

The easiest way to reach the Akaka Falls State Park is taking the route 19 North from Hilo, after crossing the 13mile marker turn to the right on route 220 heading for Honomu and the sign boards will lead to the Akaka Falls State Park.

Activities In Akaka Falls State Park

The park allows a great hiking trail but no camping or biking within the premises, which runs a paved path through a heaven of view amidst flourishing tropical vegetation and perfumed by tropical flowers.

The self-guided tour in the park around the 0.4 mile loop of the hiking trail gives the feel of exhausting forest hiking. The paved path leads to the Kahuna Falls and the key attraction of the park the Akaka Falls. The Kahuna falls 100 ft looking like one of the typical Hawaiian small falls for the falls side water drenched parties.

Hike up to the focal draw of the state park, the Akaka Falls. The Akaka drops 442 ft. with its rippling cascade of crystal water. Enjoying the scenic beauty of the place all one can do in the park, with a little walk through the hiking trail. It is ideal to train the kids hiking in the park, walking through the flourishing green and amidst the forest-like ambience in every way, devoid of the wild animals.

While enjoying nature’s mystic beauty in Akaka Falls State Park some shopping can be done. A lady sells hand paintings on prints and other handicrafts in the parking lot. The way to the Akaka Falls is also enjoyable.

There are some other little places of interests around the park. One can also check out Hilo Town, Coconut Island, Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, Rainbow Falls State Park, Waipio Valley Lookout, and Hilo Farmer’s Market on the day out.

Tickets At The Akaka Falls State Park

The entry fee to the park is $1 for walk-in and $5 for drive-in.

Address : End of Akaka Falls Road, Off Highway 220 Hilo, Island of Hawaii, HI

Hawaii is a unique state because it is entirely made up of large and small islands. The most fascinating part is that each island is completely different from the other in terms of scenic beauty. Each island, infact, has a speciality of its own. The Kaua’i Island is one of the Hawaii islands and is the oldest among all the other islands. Hence from a geographical aspect this island has the densest of forests, the steepest and the most stunning of cliffs and definitely the deepest canyons.
Hence the Waimea Canyon is one of the most beautiful canyons in this island which has been carved by the gift of nature over centuries. This canyon has different types of colours ranging from lush green to various shades of brown. This is solely due to the fact that this canyon has been formed by volcanic and lava flows over centuries over which the greens of the dense forest have taken over. Hence one can only imagine the dramatic scenic beauty this canyon would create. But to see the canyon in reality would be a completely different kind of experience. There are a lot of provisions made for various activities like trekking and hiking along with camping as well. This is also an ideal place for photography. Hence this place is highly recommended for people who love to be in tune with nature.

An island of the Hawaiian archipelago, Molokai is the fifth largest island of the Hawaiian chain of islands. Lying to the east of Oahu & to the north of Lanai. While the lights of Oahu are visible from the western end of this island, the neighboring islands Lanai & Maui are clearly visible from anywhere along the southern shore.

History says that Molokai was originally the refuge of those suffering from the Hansen’s disease, that is, Leprosy. However, the present inhabitants of this island are only successors of those who suffered from that ailment. A survey conducted by the Natural Geographic Traveler Magazine ranks Molokai 10th among the 111 sustainable island destinations of the world.

Geographical studies suggest that Molokai was formed from two distinct volcanoes: East & West Molokai. A catastrophe struck the island about 1.5million years ago & what is now left is only a debris field lying towards the north of the Pacific Ocean. It is quite interesting to note that a view of the sea cliffs of this island was shown in the famous movie Jurassic Park. These sea cliffs are the highest in the world. Located in the Maui County, Molokai is also a part of the State of Hawaii. For more visitors information on Molokai you can go to the Molokai Visitor’s Association Website.
