Akaka Falls

Akaka Falls

Akaka Falls, one of Hawaii’s most beautiful sights, is not only an amazing place to visit but also stores some unexpected surprise for you. The name of the falls or park does not suggest that there is another equally beautiful falls ere to watch. The name of this second falls is Kahuna. You will enjoy the panoramic beauties well before you reach the falls.

When you approach the falls, you will hear it before you can see anything. You might feel that gentle cool breeze coming in form the ocean. Before you realize you will be at the area from where you can enjoy the entire falls and all the beauties surrounding it. The falls is narrow, falls straight down four hundred and twenty feet. It may not be the biggest falls in Hawaii, but certainly the most accessible.

Before you get to the main attraction, you might want to take a look at the Kahuna falls which is hundred feet. Unlike the main falls, water here slides down the mountain. This falls s partially hidden.

From the entrance of the park up to the falls is at least half hour walk. The ups and downs and uneven pavement cannot take away the beauty surrounding it. Enjoy it while you are there.

QUEEN EMMA SUMMER PALACE

Queen Emma Palace

Queen Emma Palace

Serving as a retreat for Queen Emma of Hawaii, her husband King Kamehameha IV & their son Prince Albert Edward. Located at 2913 Pali Highway, the summer’s Palace has now been transformed into a museum. Open for public view daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., this museum is maintained by the income from entrance fees, revenue from gift shops & funds raised by the “Daughters of Hawaii”.

A popular location for the Hawaiian royalty & the non-Hawaiian residents, Hanaiakamalama is located in the Nuuanu Valley. It is pertinent to note that the frame of this palace was built in Boston in 1848 & transported via the water route to Hawaii. Consisting of six rooms, this palace is one-storied with a porch built in the Greek revival style. Two years after its completion, this house was purchased by John Young II for $6000 in 1850.

Queen Emma was the niece of John Young. She added the Edinburgh Room to the rear structure of the palace on the eve of the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh. Later on, the ‘Daughters of Hawaii’ bought this site with an aim of restoring this monument to the history of Hawaii.

The Hulihee Palace

Hulihee Palace

Hulihee Palace

A former vacation home of the Hawaiian Royalty, the Hulihee Palace is located in Kailua-Kona in Hawaii on the Alii Drive. Hulihee originally means, “turn free”. It has now been transformed in to a museum & at present is run by the Daughters of Hawaii. Therefore, it need not be said that it displays the historic furniture & artifacts. Built out of lava rock, this museum was built by the then Governor John Adams Kuakini. The palace gradually was passed on to the possession of Princess Ruth Keelikolani. Even though the princess made the palace her chief residence, she preferred sleeping on the grass hut rather than inside the palace.

Later on, this palace was sold on to King Kalakaua & Queen Kapiolani. The King renamed this palace “Hikulani Hale” meaning the “house of the seventh ruler”. He referred to himself as the seventh ruler of the monarchy that began with King Kamehameha I. King Kalakaua remodeled the palace to give it a new appearance. The “Daughters of Hawaii” group dedicated their lives to preserving the cultural legacy of the Hawaiian Islands & the history of the Hulihee Palace. If you ever visit the Hawaii then do make it a point to visit this palace.
